BBP and Responsible Cafes

29 June 2017

The Better Business Partnership has partnered with the Responsible Cafes program! Following the huge success of the ABC War on Waste series, we encourage you to tackle the issue of coffee cups in your business. In Australia, 3 billion takeaway cups are thrown away every year, and most of them are never recycled.

Businesses have the power to reduce this and change behaviours, by influencing their team’s daily coffee habit and encouraging local cafes to reward sustainable behaviours.

FOR CAFES: Sign up to the Responsible Cafés program

Sign up on the website and join the growing crew of 2,500 Responsible Cafes across Australia who offer a discount to customers who bring their own cups. Most cafes offer between 50c and $1 but it’s up to you!

SIGN UP HERE

How it works:

  • Once you sign up, you will receive an awesome A4 poster to display in a prominent place in your café to promote the discount and help start a conversation with your customers.
  • Your cafe will be place on the searchable map on the website so conscious customers can find you.
  • Train your staff to ask takeaway customers whether they brought a cup and sell your own reusable cups in store. It’s an easy low-pressure way to get folks thinking about reuse and promote the discount.
  • Continue to make waste reduction improvements for online promotion.
  • Spread the word with a funky pledge photo and the hashtags #responsiblecafes #BYOcoffeecup for a chance to be promoted to all of Australia.

FOR OTHER BUSINESSES: Switch to reusable cups and encourage your local cafes to offer a discount

STEP 1: Your first step is to ditch disposable cups and switch your team to reusable coffee cups.

There are many types to choose from, available online or in your local cafes such as KeepCup, Cheeki, Frank Green etc. or just use a good old ceramic mug! Most are available to purchase online, or you can find local shops or cafes that stock them.

STEP 2: Talk to your favourite or regular cafes about incentivising this behaviour by offering a discount to customers with their own cup, through the Responsible Cafes movement.

Most cafes who sign up offer between 20c and $1 which means you can save a significant amount of money on your daily brew. Cafes can sign up on the Responsible Cafes website here: www.responsiblecafes.org, they will receive a poster and be added on the online searchable map so that conscious customers such as yourselves can find them. So talk to them about signing up, give them a factsheet, available here) and let’s get our local cafes to do the right thing! The BBP team will also be talking to local cafes in the area, and we’ll keep you updated of who has signed up on our website below.
